On the Course

Yesterday I had the opportunity to tag along with brother Ryan at the Ed Thomas memorial golf outing in Waverly, Iowa. I offered a little bit of physical assistance and enjoyed the day with Ryan, dad and mom bouncing around the course with the athletes and coaching celebrities in attendance.

Recent Super Bowl champion and Pro Bowl tight end Dallas Clark of the Indianapolis Colts participated in the event along with Pro Bowl defensive end Aaron Kampman, retired Pro Bowl linebacker Bryce Paup and several other notable NFLers with Iowa ties. Former Hawkeye basketball coach Tom Davis and legendary Cyclone hoops coach Johnny Orr (below) were also part of the event.

Ryan is the superintendent at Centennial Oaks Golf Club. After the festivities were over he and I headed back out to the course to play nine holes. Here are a few pictures of the king of grounds playing on his beautifully manicured 180 acres.

Ryan put this lengthy putt off the pin and would have sank the epic shot had his brother not been more concerned with getting a picture than pulling the flag.

Our Little Swimmer

Last week Kellen and I began his two week Parent/Tot swimming lessons. Two minutes into the pool on Day One he was asking me when we were going to launch ourselves off the diving board. He's definitely not timid in the water imitating all of the things he's seen his big brother do over the last three years.

Today we began our second round of four classes. Still no diving board but he gets plenty of time to jump in from the side of the pool at the close of our 30 minute swim that includes work on his front and back floating, kicks, arm scoops and bubble blowing with his face in the water. He even took an interest in the group song for the first time tonight instead of scowling at me and giving me the no-way-we're-participating-in-this-shenanigans look. I tried to play along without the same look on my face.

Three days to go. Maybe he'll still get a chance at the diving board. Until then, here's some footage of Kamikaze Kellen enthusiastically jumping into the water.
